About "The Nerd"
Now an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved has life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you"—so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"—a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. And Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence—a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising "twist" ending of the play.

ALL Roles Available:
Willum Cuthbert: Age: Late 20s-30s.
Willum is an architect and a pushover. He's kind and intelligent, but "could use a little gumption." He lacks the backbone to stand up for himself.

Tansy McGinnis: Age: Late 20s-30s.
Willum's on-again, off-again girlfriend. She's been offered her dream job in Washington, DC, and feels guilty for leaving Willum behind. Idealistic, perky weather woman, and is just as kind as Willum

Axel Hammond: Age: Late 20s-40s.
Willum's best friend, he lives in Willum's basement. He's a pretentious drama critic, always ready with a sarcastic comment, but truly likes Willum and Tansy.

Rick Steadman: Age: Late 20s-30s.
The titular "nerd." He's oblivious to insult and lacks manners or sensitivity. Little intelligence with less tact. Works as an inspector at a chalk factory in Wisconsin.

Warnock Waldgrave: Age: Late 30s-Mid 50s.
A boisterous, gruff businessman with no creativity and no tact.

Clelia Waldgrave: Age: Late 30s-Mid 50s.
Mr. Waldgrave's wife. On the surface, she appears well put together, but suffers with anxiety issues. She could burst into complete hysteria at any moment.

Thor Waldgrave: Age: 9-12
The Waldgraves' terror of a son. "Poster child for planned parenthood."
